The gorgeously gaudy Albert Memorial in London’s Kensington Gardens was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of Prince Albert, her much-loved husband. The memorial stands directly to the north of the Royal Albert Hall and is absolutely stunning on a sunny day!
This guy was flying his drone around the Memorial while I was there – his pictures must be amazing!
The level of detail in the memorial is staggering. The full dedication around each side reads “Queen Victoria and Her People – To the memory of Albert Prince Consort – As a Tribute of their Gratitude – To a Life Devoted to the Public Good”. There are statutes of the virtues, paintings of historical figures, and a gold cross crowning it all – and that’s just the canopy!
The frieze around the base of the memorial features almost 200 figures – composers, painters, sculptors and poets – to reflect Prince Albert’s lifelong support of the arts.
