Tivoli was sparkling, both in the warm summer evening and the bright light of day. From the gold trim on the rides to the glint in happy children’s eyes, there was a hum of fun, excitement and a little bit of magic.
We first wandered past the Gardens at night, and the beautiful lights and hubbub almost drew me in straight away. But instead we came back in the beautiful sunshine to soak in the atmosphere and check out the rides.
The Moorish Palace
Tivoli Gardens is the second oldest amusement park in the world and opened its gates in August 1843. From the beginning it was a massive success with theatre, music, beautiful gardens and mechanical rides. Its atmosphere of relaxed fun is said to have inspired Walt Disney, and is still very much in evidence today as we wandered the leafy green paths past beautiful flower beds and little lakes.
Enjoying the music in the sun
Apparently Tivoli is just as popular with the locals as with tourists and it’s not hard to see why, from its central location to the many attractions. There are concerts all through the summer, fireworks, shows, and so much more! We saw families with super-excited children, teens acting too cool until they saw some candy floss, and many others strolling through the park.
Feel the fear!!
After a jam-packed weekend I wasn’t feeling like any hard-core roller coaster action, but I did love exploring Tivoli – it felt like something from a slightly different, gentler era. If I’d been so inclined I could have ridden the Star Flyer, supposedly one of the highest in Europe, or the ominously-named Demon coaster – or one of the lighter rides, such as the hundred-year-old Rutschebanen coaster. Instead I soaked up the last of the beautiful Danish sun!
Bits & Pieces
Tivoli is located in the heart of Copenhagen and the main entrance is just off Vesterbrogade
There are a number of different tickets you can buy for entry depending on whether you want to go on lots of rides, a few rides, or just wander the park like I did. For more information, click here
