Dubrovnik’s beautiful fortifications around the Old Town date back to the twelfth century. They offer both a beautiful feature in their own right and the chance to see some of the best views of the town. I loved strolling them, peeking into backyards and surveying the gorgeous blue waters below. At sunset, the walls were tinged with gold and the red roofs glowed – it was utterly stunning.
We began at the south-eastern Fort of St Luke, one of three entrances to the wall walk. There is a strict one-way system on the wall – a necessity with so many visitors soaking up the panoramas. As we proceeded around the sun began to drop and the views became ever more magical. The dipping light sparkled off the waves and picked out balconies in houses below. At each turn the town looked more photogenic and I had to force myself to admire it with my eyes as well as through my lens.
Crazy traffic heading into town – no that is not a parking lot!
The gang on the wall
The walls are a total distance of nearly 2 kilometres and are open from 8 or 9am until around 7pm in the summer. We allowed ourselves plenty of time, about an hour and a half, to make the trip and I’m so glad we did – we didn’t feel rushed and could just soak in the panoramas in every direction. Luckily those of us who’d climbed Mount Srd that morning weren’t tired of walking – or those views!

I loved our walk around Dubrovnik’s fortified walls and timing it for sunset was utter perfection! For more information on visiting the walls, click here.
