When I returned to London in February after my New Zealand extravaganza, I wanted to immerse myself in all things London again. I watched Suffragettes and Legend on the plane, forced myself to go for jet-lagged walks around the neighbourhood, and equally embraced the sights of Sainsburys and Westminster Abbey. But I also wanted to see some parts of London that were new to me, and so I found myself drawn to the gorgeous mews streets.
Disclaimer: not actually in a mews, but so pretty huh?!
Genuine mews house, almost perfect symmetry!
With thanks to A Lady in London and the Mewsings London Instagram account, I narrowed down my explorations to around Notting Hill and Westbourne Grove. Once there, I simply wandered, soaking up London and poking my nose around corners, just to see what I would find. And what I found were beautiful buildings and cute little streets – the perfect welcome back to London!
Which do you prefer, pastels or the chessboard approach?
I love the provision for sitting outside in the (rare) London sunshine
My favourites were Denbigh Mews, for its cute cobbles and this lovely facade, St Lukes Mews because it is so impossibly gorgeous, and Colville Mews. And you may be wondering, what makes a mews street? Well, they usually were built as a lane of stables during the 17th and 18th centuries – only in London would this now be highly desirable housing. They used to have the carriage house below and servant living quarters above. Now the ones that have kept their cobbles and original design are highly sought after – and I applaud their owners for their almost-universal dedication to aesthetics.

Again, not a mews, but how great are the colours of these Notting Hill houses?!
Have you ever visited London’s mews? What do you like to do when you want a ‘refresher’ on your city?
