Oxford may claim the title of dreaming spires, but after exploring Cambridge from land, stream and air, there’s no doubt in my mind that the university towns are equals when it comes to beauty. I arrived on a beautiful late spring Sunday with a few hours set aside to explore before a picnic with friends studying in the town. I was spoilt for choice of direction and ended up following my nose, with great success!
My first sight of the town’s famous punts
I hit the jackpot early as I let the crowd lead me into Trinity College just before midday. Simply a case of me wondering where everyone else was headed – but I ended up witnessing the historic and spine-tingling ritual of choirs singing to and with each other from the College’s towers. It was absolutely magical!
It was a matter of only a few minutes spent wandering around Cambridge before I began questioning whether I could live the student life again, for the sake of spending time amongst these leafy green lawns and gorgeous historic buildings.
I’ve just spotted this is also a super-sneaky selfie… so sneaky I didn’t even realise I’d done it!
Intellectual picnic on the grass, anyone?
Clare College
Great St Mary’s Church
My next excellent spur-of-the-moment decision was to climb the tower of Great St Mary’s (entry £4 at time of writing) in the centre of town for a bird’s eye view over the market square and colleges. It was a tight and twisty staircase, but worth it for the beautiful panoramas from the top!
The stunning Kings College and Chapel
The Old Schools
Gonville and Caius College, with Trinity in the background
Kings College
Never can resist a wonky gorgeous old building
All too quickly it was time to head towards the park for picnic time with my friends… but of course, that wasn’t too much of a hardship. In fact, I ended up having a super-fun adventure… check back next week to read all about it!
Have you visited Cambridge, or been lucky enough to study there?
