From the bustling bazaars of Istanbul, I’d like to bring you briefly back to London and the fabulous Maltby Street Market. On an overcast London morning, the lovely Kasha of Lines of Escape and I headed into Bermondsey with our stomachs rumbling. My love for Borough Market is well-documented, and I’d heard that Maltby originated from some of Borough’s best artisan producers moving along the railway lines to these arches tucked beside the bridge.
My first thought was that I wanted to try everything! There were delicious pastries, breakfast waffles, craft beer and gin – alright, it may have been a little early for the latter two. I love the variety of Maltby, and the beauty of its small size is that there aren’t too many double-ups of stall – it feels the right kind of selective.
I had to bring a few of these beauties home to remind Nicole of our Portuguese adventures!
First stop for me was coffee, which I inhaled so fast there was no time for photos. With my caffeine injection taken care of, Kasha and I completed several laps of the Ropewalk to make sure we made the best possible breakfast choice.
One of the things that was really great about Maltby was how much the people manning the stalls engaged with those browsing them – from loudly calling out their wares to explaining in great detail the provenance of fruits in a chutney. You can tell how much love they have for their food, and it comes through in the taste!

It was one of the hardest choices I’ve had to make, but we eventually settled on the delicious ‘Sobrasada’ from Phatbreads, which a smiling Dixie whipped up before our eyes. With chorizo, thinly sliced potato, caramelised onions and rosemary crowned by an egg, it smelt amazing and tasted even better!
YUM
Browsing the market and catching-up with Kasha was a brilliant way to spend a morning, and I’ve been recommending Maltby Street to everyone since – if you’re in London, check it out soon!
