One of the highlights of our Mexico trip was the beautiful colours of Cholula & Puebla. Located to the south-west of Mexico City, these very different towns had at least one gorgeous thing in common – their streets were rainbow-hued!
A common theme of our Mexican trip was sites where the Spanish colonials had used a religious or cultural area of importance for their own. In Cholula, they took advantage of the overgrown Great Pyramid to build the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios – in this case I can hardly blame them as the views from the top are magnificent!
A light snack of grasshoppers – dried and mixed with lime and chilli, I actually found them quite tasty! They do say that we’ll all be eating bugs for protein soon, right?!
We began by walking through the narrow tunnels of the Great Pyramid. Excavations have shown nine levels, with altars and human offerings (quite glad we didn’t see those!) dating back to 900 CE. Amazing! As you can see it was quite a tight squeeze – not helped by excitable school groups in front and behind. I found it both fascinating and a little claustrophobia-causing to think of the hill and church far above us.

Back on the ground, we walked through a market and then watched in awe as performers spun high and then flung themselves off to sail through the air – it reminded me of bungy-jumpers, but without the bounce!
We reluctantly left the colourful streets of Cholula, but were rewarded with an equally beautiful town – that of Puebla.

Wandering around the town was a visual treat already, but my eyes only widened as the sun began to drop, dressing the colourful buildings in a golden hue. Just gorgeous!

Once we’d finished exploring, it was back to our hotel, Meson Sacristia de La Compañia. A gorgeous boutique outfit with huge rooms and antique decor, it really took pink to the max!
