Our last couple of days in Mexico were action-packed, from a Seventh Wonder of the World to floating in salty seas to 24 hours of pure luxury. In between we stayed in a beautiful colonial town and bathed in crystal clear waters deep beneath the ground! Quite the end to my amazing Cuban and Mexican adventure.
News is now coming through of a catastrophic earthquake that hit Mexico City and Puebla state overnight. My thoughts are with all those affected.
Although I just declared my undying love for the incredible ruins of Palenque, Uxmal’s unusual pyramid was also a highlight of our Mexican tour. Sandwiched in between nights spent in the colourful towns of Campeche and Merida, we explored its beautiful green lawns and many sculptures to the rain god Chaac. Just like Palenque, it was relatively quiet and perfect to wander around, soaking in our surroundings.
Palenque is without a doubt my favourite ruins that I visited in Mexico, and as you may have already seen, we visited quite a few! It could have been the swell of empowerment from facing my fear and climbing into a hillside tunnel to spot teeny bats, or perhaps the splendour of the site’s massive expanse, only a fraction of which has been fully excavated. It was definitely caused at least in part by the beautiful jungle location. But whatever the reason, Palenque simply blew me away. Here’s what we saw.
Colour was one of the themes of my trip in Cuba and Mexico, from the classic cars of Havana to the bright walls of Puebla. San Cristóbal de las Casas continued the theme, with colourful markets, crafts, cars and food. Despite the very different feel to this mountain town, I still found it equally beautiful to those we had seen before.
