I knew I’d left Auckland far far behind when I started having to plan day trips to the seaside, as opposed to wandering down the road to my local beach. My English seaside pilgrimages so far have both been to Brighton, also apparently known as London-by-the-sea. Its proximity to London certainly makes it easy to head down for the day, and its cute lanes and relaxed atmosphere mean there is plenty to see and enjoy once you’re there.
The first time I visited Brighton was in early July with my sister Zoe and our Dad. We had come down to visit a friend of Dad’s, and the main reason to swing by the town was a pilgrimage to Choccywoccydoodah for Zoe. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s a bespoke cake and chocolate shop with its own television show, and Zoe is more than slightly obsessed with it.
If drooling over the chocolate and cakes in the shop isn’t enough, you can visit the cafe and tuck in straight away. We ate pieces of cake roughly the size of our faces, coated in chocolate, and what Zoe rated as one of the best hot chocolates she’d ever had. So yum!
While it was allegedly summer, the temperatures were cool owing to the sea-mist which is a common feature of the English coast. Not quite what I picture when I think of days at the beach!
Fortunately by the time I returned at the end of the month, things were looking much more summery. Kate, Gin, Stacey and I came down to visit our friend Adam, who kindly took us and his flatmate out sailing to make the most of the beautiful day.
As can happen, the day changed pretty quickly and sailing back became quite the experience, shooting along at a massive angle – fun times!
Back on dry land, we wandered along the beach front and into the gorgeous wee lanes. Every twist and turn had cute shops and cafes – awesome for wandering and window gazing!
Brighton is perfect for anyone seeking a change of pace from London, and super easy by train or car. I’ll be back soon!
