{VIDEO} Exploring Iceland!

My Easter trip to Iceland was an incredible experience, despite the near constant rain and snow.  In many ways the landscape reminded me of my New Zealand home – although with a lot more snow around!  We took a tour of the Golden Circle, looked out over Reykjavik from Hallgrimskirka and soaked in the Blue Lagoon.  Possibly my favourite day, though, was when we hired a car and drove along the south coast, stopping wherever took our fancy.  This included a pause right in the middle of nowhere so I could make friends with an Icelandic pony!  For all this and much more, check out the video.

{VIDEO} Sailing The Greek Islands!

Wow, I’ve just noticed that this is post #200!  And what better way to mark this occasion than with a video post on one of the best summer adventures I’ve ever had – a week sailing the Greek Saronic Islands with some fantastic friends.  It was so unlike most of my other holidays, with little to do other than swim, soak up the sun, and explore one beautiful little island after another – I loved it!  Here’s a video snapshot of what our week looked like…

We went with Medsailors and I can wholeheartedly recommend them – especially if you’re lucky enough to get our awesome skipper Alex!  The trip was very well-organised, with a structure that allowed us some flexibility in our days, but also the chance to meet up with the other boats in our flotilla for some fun at night.  Our skipper loved sailing and so we got the sails out often, it was so much fun to learn how to run up the mainsails and steer a course.

We sailed out of Athens and visited a different port each night – there were a couple of long days sailing but also plenty that were only a few hours, giving us time to go for scooter rides round an island, try para-sailing and water-biscuiting, and of course have loads of swims whenever we needed to cool down.

Our boat was well-equipped and had just enough room – it’s always going to be fairly tight quarters on a yacht!  Fortunately we didn’t spend much time below decks as we were often in or on the water.  One of the best parts was the paddle-board towing… as you can see we soon got adventurous with trying to get two, three, all the way up to six up at once.  It was a fantastic week with some great friends – we’re already plotting a similar trip next summer.

{VIDEO} Hot Air Ballooning in Cappadocia

We rose before the sun, adrenalin pumping, excitement building.  The jolting ride out to the take-off site could do little to dampen my enthusiasm as we began to see colourful shapes in front of us, hot air balloons inflating from their fiery core.  As we clambered into the basket, my stomach began doing little flips, but soon calmed as we rose serenely through the early morning sky to greet the new day from the air.

My first hot air ballooning experience had a surreal, dream-like quality to it, and it’s almost impossible to describe the euphoria I felt watching the sun rise above the rocky horizon, with the first rays picking out the beautiful colours of the balloons around us. Truly a magical experience.


We flew with Voyager Balloons, who were professional and friendly. There are loads of operatives in Goreme, and obviously I didn’t get a chance to try any others, but I would recommend Voyager.

{VIDEO} Paragliding in Morzine!

I’ve always wanted to go paragliding.  The idea of leaping off the side of a mountain thrilled me as much as it made me nervous, and as soon as I spotted the paragliders cruising the afternoon thermals in Morzine, I knew that I was going to give it a go there.  We were lucky that the weather was beautiful every single day, with what I’m told were near-perfect conditions.  All I know is that I got to launch myself off the side of a snowy mountain into a gorgeous blue sky, then drift peacefully through the air drinking in the view and loving every single minute.

Even now, I find it impossible to eloquently put into words quite how amazing this experience was – and my only words while I was in the air were “Wowwww!” So here’s my video of the flight, with incredible views of Morzine and its surrounds in the mid-afternoon sun.
