Christchurch has been through so much. The devastating effects of the huge earthquakes that ripped up the town, and more recently the trauma caused by a white terrorist in the city’s mosques. But the city has an energy, and a sense of purpose found. Spending two weeks there for work, plus some regular visits to see my awesome friends, have allowed me to experience the city’s energy through its street art, and delicious food!
A lot of Christchurch’s inner city still features islands of buildings surrounded by empty lots, often repurposed into car parks. I loved this work by Rone, taking advantage of the exposed building.
I’d skip the takeaway rubbish cup now – but I would definitely go back for Rollickin Gelato‘s delicious vegan flavours! (They have dairy ones too) The sorbet colours of New Regent Street make the perfect backdrop.
Millennials, sad you can’t buy a house? Just swap your avocado for smashed pumpkin and become a property tycoon! (cue cynical laughter) But seriously, the smashed pumpkin on toast at Hello Sunday was a totally delicious twist on a classic.
This beautiful piece by Kevin Ledo of kuia Whero O Te Rangi Bailey (Poppy) was one of my favourites, especially with the early morning light just embracing her.
The Tannery out in Woolston is a gorgeous collection of eateries, a cinema, boutique shops and more. I especially loved this unusual and tasty brunch at Mitchellis.
Sumner’s beach just out of town is the perfect spot to relax. And when you’re done with the sand, Beach Bar serves up an epic pub lunch right on the beachfront!
The Riverside Market is the biggest thing to happen to the central city’s eating and drinking scene – filled with everything from the butcher and the baker to cheap eats to bars and restaurants. I can personally vouch for Shaka Bros’ burgers, enjoyed outside in the sunshine!
Have you visited Christchurch? What would be your first stop – the streets or the eats?
