Spring 2021 in Auckland meant… yes, another lockdown for the city. We had another five weeks in strict lockdown, which is apparently amongst the toughest in the world. Not much fun! Fortunately we were living in our new house and able to get out to exercise, and slowly things opened up so that we could get out, see friends, and even start the adventures again.

In our first holiday after a long lockdown, we wanted somewhere that felt like an escape but wasn’t actually too far away. Enter, the Āwhitu Peninsula. Tucked at the bottom left of the Auckland region, it has golden and black sand beaches, and plenty to do for a relaxed weekend away!

Just west of Auckland is a stretch of wild black sand beaches. Back in the before times, Joe and I went on a luxury mini staycation at the epic Waitakere Resort. We explored nearby Piha and Karekare, ate amazing food, and surfed – the perfect little break!

Kawau Island calls itself a jewel in the Hauraki Gulf and it’s not hard to see why. Its turquoise waters lap against golden beaches, and inland there’s beautiful native bush to explore. It’s a fun day-trip from Auckland, or a haven for boaties passing by!
