It was getting slightly weird. Of course, you didn’t like to talk about it too much – that would be awkward. But the fact remained that the London sunshine seemed to be sticking around. I had planned to do lots of museum and church visits, and to investigate the many brilliant galleries in London – but there is just no way I’m going to do this when there is this much sunshine to be enjoyed.
Instead, I took myself to Greenwich. It’s one of London’s largest parks, at over 73 hectares, and includes the 2012 Olympic equestrian venue, a deer park, rose gardens, and of course the famous Meridian and the Royal Observatory. I had grand plans to explore many of the paths, but first decided to have a little lie-down in the sunshine. Just because I could. Where’s the good in ‘funemployment’ if you can’t make decisions like that?!
Over an hour later, I stirred myself to climb the hill to the Observatory, where I admired the stunning views across the river, from St Paul’s to the O2. London was looking goooood.
The official measurements of feet, yards and inches are displayed by the Observatory, along with the Shepherd Clock, which shows GMT but in a 24-hour format.
I wandered further into the park, and headed for Queen Caroline’s bath, an oddity I’d read about in a book of London’s unusual spots. It’s one of the few remnants of Montagu House, where Princess Caroline spent part of her life in semi-containment for being a bit of a slapper – despite being the wife of King George IV she was never even officially crowned. Gutted.
I also had a quick look at the famous rose gardens, but perhaps as a result of the extremely cool spring England had, few of the bushes were even daring to show a bud – I think a return visit will be in order once they’ve enjoyed a few more sunny days!
(Apologies for the iPhone photos, my camera took my relaxed approach a bit too seriously and the battery died)
