It snowed pretty consistently during our weekend in Stockholm, which I found perfectly magical when I wasn’t slipping in the streets. Our short cruise through Stockholm’s harbour and out to the archipelago was my favourite time in the snow, although it was also the coldest!
We headed out from the harbour near Gamla Stan (the Old Town) on a boat similar to that in the centre above, which had an open deck. A bilingual guide kept us informed about some of the history of Stockholm and the various buildings and islands that we were passing – it was fascinating.
Heading into the snow
Rugged up – and still freezing!
The impressive sculpture ‘God, our Father, on the Rainbow’
We cruised through Stockholm’s harbour and out to within touching distance of the islands as the snow gently (freezingly) fell. Coming from a temperate part of New Zealand I didn’t see much snow growing up – we were beach bunnies rather than ski bunnies. It’s therefore not that surprising that when I finally got to be surrounded by snow I could not get enough of it, even when my hands were so chilly I could barely hold the camera.
Deb, Deb and Cleo also well wrapped up for the snow!
I loved the splashes of bright colours against the monochrome snow, land and water – it was mesmerising watching one bay slip into the next as we glided past. Apparently the closer islands such as Djurgarden are very popular in the summer months – I’d love to come back and see those colours with green leaves and blue skies as their background. Just for the opportunity to contrast them, of course…
Funnily enough the rollercoasters were taking a break

Cruising the harbour was a great way to combine history and geography lessons with some stunning views of the city. It was very special to be standing at the rail, blinking snowflakes out of my eyes, as I tried to drink in every minute of the cruise, and it was over far too fast. I guess I’ll just have to go back!
Have you ever done a sightseeing cruise?
We cruised with Stromma and their ticket office can be found in central Stockholm near the eastern entrance to Gamla Stan.
