This week I celebrated my 27th birthday, and London has put on the most glorious sunny days! It is a bit strange having an autumn birthday, but when it is this beautiful, I don’t mind at all.
I’ve been travelling for nearly all of my life, and nothing makes me happier than the fact that I am celebrating this birthday in a new country to the last birthday, with plans to visit many more before the next one.
I don’t usually go for New Years resolutions, as I don’t think you can magically wake up on the 1st of January with a different mindset. However, I do like a few birthday goals, especially when they are travel-related. My three that I’d like to achieve before my next birthday are:
1. Improve my French so that I can hold a conversation again
I learnt French at school and for a while at university, but now struggle with the all but the most basic of sentences. Now that I’m so close to France, it seems crazy not to work on this again. After all, the best way to learn is to attempt to speak it, right? I see lots of French trips in my not-too-distant future!
2. Run some half-marathons in exotic locations
I have a lifetime goal of running 21 half-marathons before I’m 42. Not such arbitrary numbers as they may appear… 21 for the number of kilometres, 42 because as we all know that is the meaning of life*. So far I’ve run them in Auckland City, the North Shore, Coatesville, Kerikeri, and Sydney. But now I’m in Europe, there are so many more… Paris-Versailles! Prague! Madrid! Looking forward to adding to my tally with some seriously cool finish-line photos.
3. Travel, travel, travel
Funnily enough, I don’t think this one will be too hard, as there are still plenty of gaps in the calendar to fill and many many places on the must-see list. But I definitely want to make the most of all my opportunities this year to experience the best of what Europe and beyond has to offer. Can’t wait!
