Wear white. Fling colour. Embrace life. These are the simple rules of the Holi Festival of Colours, that make for an awesome day!
Kate and I arrived at Battersea Park not sure whether to expect an Indian cultural festival, a day-time rave, or some combination of the two. It became obvious fairly quickly that the crowd and the festival was leaning towards the latter, and so we embraced the madness.
The Holi Festival movement is based on a Hindu religious festival celebrating the beginning of spring, and the throwing of the coloured powder symbolises all the beautiful colours of spring, with an emphasis on fun. We quickly got into the spirit of things and soon found ourselves covered in paint!
Although people were throwing colour throughout the day, the highlight was definitely the hourly countdown which saw a riot of colours thrown into the air all at once.
We had a blast dancing and throwing paint – definitely check out a Holi Festival if there’s one near you! I’d love to go to India one day and experience the whole festival, but for now I’ll be heading back to London’s version next year for more colour fun.
