As you might have noticed by now, I love going on random little adventures or seeing where my feet take me. Although it’s by no means off the beaten track, my latest little adventure was a lot of fun. I read a small footnote in my London guidebook noting that rather than the Tube or bus, a different way to get to the Camden markets was by walking along the Regent’s Canal. As my train from Newbury gets into Paddington, very close to the canal, it sounded like a great way to see a bit more of the city.

I started my journey at the Rembrandt Gardens, where the roses were in full bloom.

As it was still fairly early, the canal was quiet and the reflections of the immaculate boats were undisturbed.

I loved the contrast between these guys, who looked a little unsure of the rowing basics, and the immense house behind them.

Although I had seen the canal ran behind the London Zoo, I didn’t realise how close it was until three warthogs launched themselves into their outside cage – a different type of wildlife to the swans and squirrels I was expecting to see along the canal!

Further along, these kayakers appeared to be looking for more exciting waters.

I really enjoyed my peaceful walk along the canal, and was almost sorry when I came to the markets. It was lovely to be in the greenery, away from the roads and many of the crowds, and I was charmed by the many canal boats, each with their own look and personality.

From the quiet of the canal, the markets were a shock to the senses. Packed with tourists, shoppers and vendors calling their wares, the stalls seemed to continue forever. The hardest decision was deciding which of the many cuisines on offer would make the perfect lunch – I will definitely be heading back to try more!

The colour and hubbub doesn’t end at the markets either, but continues down the street. I am getting a little obsessed with brightly coloured buildings, of which there seem to be many in London, and Camden certainly delivered!

I’d definitely recommend a wander along the canals for a different style of London walk, and it was the perfect way to work up an appetite for the craziness of Camden!
