Dubrovnik took me by surprise with its beauty, from the narrow cobbled streets to the houses tucked into the mountainside. Most of all, I loved the way the walls balanced at the edge of the sheer rocky cliffs with only the gorgeous blue of the Adriatic below.
I took this photo on a late-afternoon wander around the town’s walls. Constructed mainly during the 12th – 17th centuries, they were intended to protect the vulnerable town from invasion by sea or land. Today they form an uninterrupted circuit around much of the old town, and offer countless viewpoints from which to appreciate its multi-faceted beauty.
